Abstract Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been long recognized as a promising way for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and fossil fuel substitution. The growing EV charging demand and the increasing charging power may cause charging queues and overloads, threatening the safe operation of both traffic and power systems. This paper proposes an approach for the congestion assessment in fast charging stations (FCSs) due to large-scale integration of EVs in coupled traffic-power systems of smart cities. Queuing theory is utilized to model the formulation and evaluation of the spatial-temporal varying charging queues in fast charging stations. The impact of power system operation on traffic congestion in FCSs is discussed. The system studies demonstrate that the limited EV charging power may deteriorate the traffic congestions at FCSs. © 2021 IEEE
