Abstract As we look to the future, smart cities are no longer just a visionary ideal, but an emerging reality that will play a central role in shaping urban life, but where technology will only truly fulfill its mission if it is also a catalyst for social inclusion and social sustainability for cities to become more resilient communities where there is equal access to the opportunities generated by digitization, education, culture, active participation in decisions, and ensuring the necessary support for vulnerable and marginalized groups. The team writing this volume, experts from different specializations, share the belief that smart cities will be places in the future where technology has used the ideal of making a better world, more connected communities, more cohesive, sustainable, and resilient to social and economic crises, or to the challenges of climate change. Using digital technologies and beyond, we can transform today's technical advances into the engine of sustainability and the main tool for social inclusion. Inclusive innovation ecosystems can become tools to aggregate efforts, experiment, and bring social innovation, but above all bringing together all the actors involved in urban development processes. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology and its licensors 2025.
