Abstract The emergence of smart cities has provided fertile ground for social innovation, combining a strong technological component with the development and implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) in urban areas. Despite the challenges cities face, such as an aging population, deteriorating infrastructure, pollution, and limited budgets, they also offer opportunities for social development. Social innovation thrives in smart cities as it fosters innovative practices that enhance the quality of life. While the relationship between technological and social innovation remains unclear, it is argued that social innovation leads to a fundamental realignment between citizens, the state, civil society, and the market. Smart cities have the potential to establish governance structures, infrastructure, and ICT frameworks that promote social innovation, while addressing social problems and imperatives, such as economic and demographic growth, inclusion, and quality of life. This chapter presents a framework considering smart cities as platforms for technological and social innovation, aiming to improve productivity, sustainability, and livability. It examines how well-designed built environment and ICT contribute to dynamic smart cities that drive both technological and social innovation. Accordingly, this chapter provides a descriptive analysis of the existing literature on the correlation between smart cities and social innovation, outlining its knowledge structure, and addressing obstacles to sustainable growth with a social focus; and identifies the role of the business sector in view of promoting ICT-driven social innovation. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Anna Visvizi, Orlando Troisi, and Mara Grimaldi; individual chapters, the contributors.
