Abstract The term digital twin originated in the aerospace industry but has since also been applied to other sectors. In the light of the digital transformation of the public sector and the increasing developments towards smart cities, the concept also is being applied to cities, forming urban digital twins. This paper proposes a formal domain model for the concept of urban digital twins based on different approaches in the literature, aiming to clearly establish the terminology and facilitate further discussions on the topic. © 2024 IEEE.
