Abstract The transportation system is evolving toward self-driving, electrified, and smart vehicles. Wireless vehicles and infrastructure components on the road are linked to traffic management centers that employ artificial intelligence to manage the city's traffic efficiently. As an outcome, the country needs intelligent transportation systems that can offer safe and dependable transportation while also minimizing pollution, Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and energy usage. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview and examples of how AI and ML have been utilized to construct an Intelligent transportation system (ITS) capable of addressing concerns of traffic congestion and road protection to avoid accidents. This paper studies the innovation of fifth generation Internet of things (5G-IoT) driven by advances in Artificial intelligence (AI), Machine learning (ML), enduring 5G initiatives, and 5G Quality of service (QoS) necessities. Moreover, such wireless communication increases the vulnerability of ITS networks to security threats. Additionally, we discuss future options to optimize the security-to-cost ratio for ITS applications. The proposed work focuses on time consumption along with packet dropping probability. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
