Abstract The development of a smart city consists of multidimensional approaches. One of the elements of the smart city development process is citizens. Citizens are the direct beneficiaries of the smart city. In the same way, based on the co-creation approach, citizens’ engagement in the development of the smart city is significant. Thus, the aim is to gain new knowledge about the relationship between citizens’ engagement in smart city creation and their demographic factors. The survey was carried out in the year 2021 using the Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI), and Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) interview methods on a random sample of 427 citizens from the West Pomeranian region of Poland. The results will lead to making sustainable development-oriented decisions. Moreover, the results are significant for the regional policy-making process and other researchers interested in smart city development. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
