Abstract The emergence of blockchain has its roots in the virtual currency known as bitcoin, which appeared during the global financial crisis around 2008. The foundation of blockchain is a special technology solution that provides trust and transparency in a decentralised setting. Since then, researchers and professionals have given careful consideration to a variety of blockchain applications in a wide range of fields like marketing, finance, supply chain, and human resources. Healthcare is no exception to this condition, where a decentralised technology like blockchain functions as a beneficial catalyst for integrated healthcare by supplying data integrity, useful insights, and reducing numerous obstacles in the healthcare industry. The restoration of stakeholder consensus while addressing data security and integrity issues is seen to be possible using blockchain technology. BlocHIE is another blockchain-based option along similar lines. A framework built on blockchain is also shown, which uses embedded predictive approaches to collect meaningful data. The healthcare industry has seen some applications for blockchain technology, ranging from disease surveillance to proof of disease. A major area of interest, particularly from the perspective of the patient, has been the monitoring of the drug supply chain through blockchain technology. The application of automated and intelligent blockchain for healthcare is shown in an innovative perspective on cognitive healthcare blockchain. However, it’s important to consider these individual applications in the context of several healthcare fields holistically. This will aid in the development of a smart healthcare system, particularly in relation to smart cities. With the support of technologies like analytics, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and others, blockchain’s capabilities can help alleviate many problems and challenges facing healthcare systems all around the world. In this chapter, we define and explain a smart healthcare system driven by blockchain using a conceptual model and examples of implementation based on research. This study aids in planning and strategising the use of blockchain technology by offering a comprehensive view on the applicability and knowledge of blockchain to the healthcare industry. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Bhanu Chander, B.
