Abstract The emerging disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), fifth-generation (5G) communication standards, blockchain and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are creating a significant impact on every aspect of business, industries and services across the world. The true potential of AI, IIoT and 5G technologies can be realized by integrating these technologies with blockchain to design smart and powerful systems. IIoT technology enables intelligent and optimized operations among the machines, computers and people. Blockchain technology is a distributed network providing secure online transactions directly from sender to receiver without any third-party interventions. 5G technology enables super connectivity for billions of IIoT devices. The authors have carried out an extensive study of literature and classified applications industry-wise. The highlights from each paper are tabulated. Taxonomy on the organization of chapter, concepts and a table of acronyms are presented. The number of papers reviewed industry-wise is depicted as a pie chart. A comparative analysis of curated survey papers with specific parameters to understand the subject coverage and to discover the research gaps is illustrated. The research issues, implementation challenges and future trends are highlighted. A case study of a world-class tool manufacturing company was presented. This chapter concludes with a holistic view of IIoT applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. All rights reserved.
