Abstract The emergence of more sophisticated data analytics, huge volumes of data and new sources of data have added a new component to our understanding of the use of information technology in the public sector and for digital governance. This chapter presents the evolution of digital governance research and aligns it with current developments associated with data analytics or ‘big data’. In many ways, the current discourse reiterates well-known discussions within the e-government research community. Following that, the authors reflect on the ‘promise’ of big data for both service delivery and policy advice. This includes: the quality and reliability of data, issues arising from mixing public and private sector data, the ownership of raw and manipulated data and ethical issues concerning surveillance and privacy. © John Storm Pedersen and Adrian Wilkinson 2019.
