Abstract With the growing scale and complexity of city infrastructures, the need for data analysis and machine learning is becoming more and more prominent in the field of civil infrastructure sensing. This coupled with the explosion of available sensing data in smart cities and smart infrastructures has offered new opportunities like never before. Using big data tools at a structure level, we can understand important information about structural properties and damage states, city environmental and operational conditions, as well as an individual user or group patterns. In this chapter, we explore and provide guidance for big data analytics and its application to civil infrastructure problems. Furthermore, we discuss future directions and trends that will enable large-scale monitoring of civil infrastructure and smart cities. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
