Abstract The development of smart cities has become an essential strategy to tackle the challenges of global urbanization. Among them, big data and data mining technologies play a decisive role. However, there are currently few comprehensive studies that examine research priorities and prospective trends in this field. This study undertakes a comprehensive examination of 948 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection. Using bibliometrics methods and visualization tools such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace, we analyze the development and change of these technologies in smart cities construction from 2014 to 2024. More and more keywords relate to each other, and cross-domain integration highlights the developed complexity of the domain. Furthermore, this study identifies major authors and national collaboration networks. It illustrates that the geographical and interdisciplinary research effort in global. In addition, this study reveals the key advances and future direction for applying big data and data mining technologies to smart cities construction. It also provides a foundation for advancing scientific research and technological innovation in the field. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
