Abstract With the development of social economy and the acceleration of urbanization, some cities are facing more and more serious traffic problems. The contradiction between people and vehicles, the contradiction between traffic and the environment, traffic congestion, traffic accidents, etc., almost all countries and cities have to face the same problems. The basic data analysis of smart city transportation planning proposed in this paper provides an effective way to solve these problems. The Internet of Things is an important technology to support urban intelligent transportation. In the IoT environment for urban transportation, by improving infrastructure, implementing urban. Multi-modes such as urban traffic lanes, rapid urban traffic, and rail transit, and the application of advanced information technology, urban traffic has developed rapidly and played an important role in the travel of urban residents. This paper introduces the demand analysis and system design principles of urban traffic geographic information system design and builds a detailed flow chart of system development to realize the urban traffic geographic information system database. Based on the secondary development environment of ArcGIS, the prototype of the urban traffic geographic information system is constructed. Its main functional modules include: map display and basic operations, data query, spatial analysis, and map element editing. The final results of the research show that with the increase of the amount of data, the processing time of a single machine is increased from 100 to 380 s, and the processing time of a Hadoop cluster is only 45–155 s. The execution efficiency of Hadoop in big data processing is significantly higher than that of single-machine operation. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
