Abstract In recent times the adoption of advanced technology has been increasing in the general masses. Hence the amount of data being produced in an average smart city has increased by many times. This leads to high latency and low reliability issues in the traditional cloud computing paradigm. Therefore, stagnating the functionality of the cities as a whole and thus the practice of edge computing may bring about a positive change. The decentralizing computing resources decreases the reliance on traditional cloud computing. This minimizes latency and optimizes data processing. Distributed deep learning in central and edge cloud systems reduces latency. Intelligent offloading improves service quality in smart cities, and machine learning enhances mobile edge computing. In this work, suggestions for reducing the cost for handling the smart cities are discussed. These findings and discussions can be the stepping stones towards the future. A future where smart cities can be operated with less hassle and better cost management. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved.
