Abstract This article delves into the functions and impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) in urban freight transport (UFT), starting by defining AI and urban freight transport as well as its performance. After citing examples of AI applications and their utilities in UFT based on a background that encompasses publications from ten years, the article examines the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in this field. Opportunities include improving route optimization, real-Time monitoring, and better resource management, while challenges encompass concerns regarding data privacy, integration complexities, and ethical considerations. Ultimately, the article ends by highlighting the transformative possibilities of AI in UFT and underscores the necessity of tackling challenges to fully harness its advantages. © 2024 IEEE.
