Abstract In recent years, Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has become one of the most dynamic research fields in network and smart transportation systems. It is a convergence of the mobile internet along with the Internet of Things (IoT), where vehicles function as smart moving intelligent objects within the sensing network. As an open converged network, IoV plays a significant role in solving several driving and traffic problems using advanced information and communications technology. As more and more people drive cars and vehicles, there has been a consistent increase in the number of fatalities due to accidents. As these vehicles are gradually being connected to the IoT, they form the IoV. It is a developing field for the automotive industry and an important part of smart cities. This chapter provides a brief overview of IoV and how it can be used in the medical sector. The ambulance system can be upgraded and significantly improved using IoV. We review the current notions of IoV from different perspectives. Then, we provide our idea from a network point of view and propose a novel IoV architecture with four layers. Mainly, a novel layer named coordinative computing control layer is separated from the application layer. The novel layer is used for solving the coordinative computing and control difficulties in the human-vehicle environment. After summarizing the important technologies in the IoV architecture, we build a Virtual Vehicle (VV), an incorporated image of driver and vehicle in networks that interacts with one another in cyberspace by providing traffic services and sharing sensing data coordinately, which can answer the communication bottleneck in physical space. Finally, we propose IoV architecture based on VV. © 2022 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
