Abstract Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, IoT, and Blockchain are commonly heard terms. These technologies find applications in every walk of life. Similarly, the notion of smart cities is an idea that is gaining popularity swiftly and has numerous applications. As with other technological concepts, smart cities' security is a major concern. In this paper, we discuss the various threats that a smart city faces at different layers of its architecture. Furthermore, this paper explores types of Intrusion detection systems (IDS). Since an IDS aims to counter threats in the initial phases by raising alarms as soon as any kind of abnormality is detected in the system, it is well-suited for a smart city environment. Moreover, this paper provides machine learning based techniques for IDS in detail. This paper concludes with challenges that are faced during the execution of security mechanisms in a smart city. © 2022 IEEE.
