Abstract The construction of smart cities has a significant impact and involves many aspects. This article collects data from prefecture-level cities from 2009 to 2019 and explores the impact of smart city construction on carbon emissions through the staggered DID. Research has shown that the implementation of smart cities can reduce carbon emissions and improve the urban environment. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
