Abstract The emergence and acceptance of several concepts, including resilient cities, inclusive cities, and sustainable cities, have resulted in significant changes to urban landscapes. These developments have been mostly driven by a number of factors, such as population growth, improvements in education, rising demand for goods and services from the city, and, most importantly, technological advancements. By combining smart technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities have substantially enhanced access to amenities, security, and communication. This study intends to identify significant contributors, publications, sources, affiliations, and top nations in the fields of artificial intelligence and smart city technology. Essential themes and new trends are revealed through thematic map analysis. Findings indicate a growing interest in AI and smart cities, with notable researchers Allam Z, Yigitcanlar T, and Chui K T. Leading contributors include King Abdulaziz University, Queensland University of Technology, and San Jose State University. Important nations like Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, China, England, and India are highlighted as contributors in this study.
