Abstract Tricycle has been the cheapest and the most popular choice of public transport, particularly in developing countries like India. Electrifying the traditional tricycle configuration and equipping the same with Internet of Things (IoT) makes it more secure along with improving the travel experience with its easiness and better reliability. There have been a lot of research happening in this direction for quite some time in the recent past. However, smart real-time monitoring of such electric transportation system plays a significant role in realising a cost-effective energy efficient means of public transport. Envisaging such a revolution in urban transport, this paper discusses the potential of IoT enabled electric tricycles for travel within small area like IT parks, educational institutions, smart cities etc. considering the driving pattern in Tier II cities of India. The proposed system enables remote monitoring of temperature, State of Charge (SoC), distance to empty (DTE), vehicle speed and location (Google-Map) with the help of a web application. This helps the vehicle lender/authority to analyze the vehicle performance, judge the driving pattern, improve the battery life by preventing overcharging and under-utilization, get safety alerts and locate the vehicles. © 2020 IEEE.
