Abstract Robust connectivity and a good user experience with smart cities and the IoT are just two of the benefits of 5G wireless communication devices’ extensive device capability with incredible information speeds, super dependability, and relatively minimal latency. Enhanced mobile broadband services (EMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (uRLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mmMTCs) are just a few examples of how future networks are expected to disrupt already popular applications. For this reason, it is significant to study the eco-friendliness and efficiency of 5G networks in intelligent cities. This article will use a high-level introduction to examine how 5G systems can play a crucial role in helping intelligent cities become environmentally sustainable. This article provides an overview of fifth-generation (5G) communication systems and many 5G approaches utilized in smart city apps to improve sustainability. Next, we dive into the sustainability indicators for 5G networks, including energy usage, carbon footprint, pollution, cost, health, and security, across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
