Abstract Air and water quality have a direct impact on human health and are currently major issues in urban areas. In this paper, IoT (Internet of Things) technology was used to construct a monitoring system with a wireless sensor node and various sensors to measure the quality of air and water. The system continuously monitors parameters such as temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind direction, maximum wind speed, average wind speed, hourly rainfall, daily rainfall, PM2.5, and PM10 for air quality, as well as temperature, pH, and sensor readings for water quality. To enhance smart city settings, the monitoring of air and water quality must be widespread, ubiquitous, and quick to react. The system is capable of tracking air and water pollution in real-time and transmitting the information swiftly through a wide area network. This real-time monitoring system can be seamlessly integrated with innovative approaches like smart city initiatives. Consequently, the demand for such a system is expected to increase day by day, addressing the critical need for real-time environmental monitoring. © 2024 IEEE.
