Abstract Smart sustainable cities as complex systems are characterized by wicked problems. Therefore, they need more innovative solutions and sophisticated approaches to tackle such problems. This paper sheds light on the kind of wicked problems that are associated with smart sustainable urbanism, and explores the usefulness of big data uses within this domain. Further, it discusses the relevance of urban science and data-intensive science, as informed and enabled by big data science and analytics respectively, to what has been termed as urban sustainability science. I argue that the upcoming advancements in big data science and analytics and the underpinning technologies, coupled with the ever-increasing deluge of urban data, hold great potential to advance smart sustainable urbanism and to revolutionize urban sustainability science. This paper contributes to bringing data-analytic and data-intensive scientific thinking to urban sustainability. © 2019 Association Computing Machinery
