Abstract Over the last three decades, demand of smart and intelligent society increases day by day and use of artificial technique with optical fibre sensor plays pivotal role for the development of smart cities. Optical fibre sensors have large number of applications in the field of health monitoring, military, cybersecurity, energy, aerospace, etc. However, sensors are made up of optical fibre, for excellent accuracy and sensing performance optical fibre sensor merges with artificial intelligence technology for better accuracy and performance. Optical fibre sensor technology is the backbone for future smart and intelligence city. But there is some limitations and boundaries in optical fibre sensor technology like reduction of signal-to-noise ratio, cross sensitivity, large data generation, low speed, etc. These boundaries are overcome by merging optical sensor with artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this chapter, we discuss about compressive study of optical fibre and its types and their applications and limitations. This chapter also highlights how artificial intelligence and its subset machine learning technology enhance the accuracy, performance of sensor and new applications for the development of smart and intelligence society. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
