Abstract The digital technologies associated with Industry 4.0, such as big data and analytics, augmented reality, autonomous systems/robots, the internet of things, additive manufacturing, digital twin/simulation, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and system integration, have revolutionized the manufacturing sector in realizing environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability. This chapter explores the use of smart sensing in aviation, energy grids, resource extraction, and urban development, and their effects on the ecosystem. It highlights various key areas where smart technologies are applied to achieve environmental sustainability. In smart oil fields, intelligent wells, well construction, wellbore integrity maintenance, and remediation tools are discussed. In mineral exploration, AI and machine learning applications in resource mapping, mine planning, and operational optimization are examined. Smart forestry includes the use of IoT and AI for forest inventory, monitoring forest health, and combating illegal activities. Smart oceans utilize ISCCNs with multilayer communication networks for comprehensive environmental monitoring. In smart cities, IoT is applied in transport management, energy systems, urban planning, and infrastructure monitoring. The aviation sector’s application of Industry 4.0 technologies is discussed. Agriculture 4.0 involves the use of IoT-enabled devices and precision agriculture. Finally, the smart grid’s integration of renewable energy sources and real-time data analysis is explored. © 2025 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
