Abstract Over the past few years, Industry 4.0, and more prominently, Smart Cities, have been developing into a technological reality with new advancements in people’s everyday lives. Smart cities will inevitably become increasingly interconnected as our population grows, and innovations, such as the internet of things and big data play a vital role. These cities enable us to use resources sustainably, reduce our energy usage, and redesign our cities to be as efficient as p ossible. Big data is crucial for comprehending urban issues, including how people move around cities, the energy consumed, how various infrastructures and components interact, and many more. The effective use of these limited resources becomes essential as the population rises and resources become scarcer-or overcrowded, as many say. Smart cities significantly influence the usage of resources and co mmodities. Today, they are built on and integrated with big data. One area where these technologies need eminent implementation is crowd control. There is an unforeseen need for services in the area whenever a significantly larger group of individuals congregate in one l ocation. This chapter summarizes the recent advances in addressing the challenges of overcrowding, strategies to tackle crowding, the proposed use of modified particle swarm optimization technique for an optimal path in crowded areas, the scope of smart cities to oversee and control overcrowding, and points out future research directions in this area. © 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
