Abstract The advent of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak has no doubt interrupted the cities and global societies. In response to the pandemic, countries have turned to smart city technologies as part of the emergency and recovery plan through innovative and creative approaches, with the understanding that not all the issues would have immediate solution. COVID-19 has disproportionally and negatively impacted underprivileged populations (Allam and Jones, 2020). This study aims at examining the impact of COVID-19 on mobility and public space usage in smart cities based on the knowledge and perceptions of the citizens. The study provides a preliminary insight into how scholars and professionals can provide a structured way of recognising the collaboration and integration of smart cities through use of technology infrastructure, community engagement and other innovative ideas. Based on extensive review of literature, this research has collected and analysed data using qualitative research methods. This is necessary to understand the impact of COVID-19 pandemic crisis on major smart cities’ development within the mobility perspective. Despite the limited research in the novel COVID-19 outbreak, we have contributed to the body of knowledge by critically analysing the benefits and barriers of the smart technologies on cities’ development especially during this coronavirus outcome; suggestions have also been made for preparation into post-COVID-19 to ensure continuous technological advancement and customer engagement necessary for smart development. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
