Abstract This chapter examines urban labs as innovative platforms within the smart city framework, highlighting their role in addressing urban challenges through collaborative, multi-stakeholder engagement. It explores how urban labs promote sustainable, resilient and citizen-centred urban solutions by integrating technology and community input. Based on a literature review, the study highlights challenges such as aligning diverse stakeholder interests and embedding lab outcomes in local governance. Recommendations for improving the effectiveness of urban labs include a clear alignment of stakeholder objectives and the strategic involvement of participants. The practical applications and outcomes of urban labs are illustrated through the case study of the Košice 2.0 project and the Czestochowa Urban Lab. The findings contribute to the understanding of the potential of urban labs in promoting liveable, smart urban environments. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Judyta Kabus, Luiza Piersiala, and Michal Dziadkiewicz; individual chapters, the contributors.
