Abstract Efforts to develop the necessary infrastructure for Smart Cities are increasingly being discussed to improve urban life by making it greener and more pleasant. At the center of a Smart City are urban data platforms that are used to consolidate all the necessary urban data on a single platform. When designing these platforms, the user group of citizens is often left out, which is why these platforms do not find much appeal among them. This work aims to develop a design pattern to provide citizens with added value when using urban data platforms. To achieve this, techniques of user-centered design are applied to identify added value functions based on a user analysis. The results are the formulation of three core functional groups and an interaction framework based on them. The identified function groups Discover, Accumulate and Broaden were evaluated using a usability test, which indicates a positive evaluation of the functional groups in terms of value creation, with potential for improvement in the areas of learnability, labeling, and human relevance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
