Abstract This study presents a comprehensive and multidimensional analysis of the Internet of Things (IoT) innovation ecosystem by integrating patent mining, social network analysis (SNA), clustering techniques, and technology life cycle analysis (TLCA). Using a dataset of 421,276 IoT-related patents filed between 1969 and 2024, the research identifies eight major technological clusters, with Smart Cities IoT emerging as the most prominent. Social network analysis reveals Qualcomm as the most central organization in collaboration networks, with a degree centrality of 0.67, followed by Samsung with 0.58. Betweenness centrality analysis highlights Huawei, with a value of 0.42, as a critical intermediary in knowledge exchange. The life cycle analysis shows varying maturity stages across clusters, with Consumer IoT approaching saturation, while Quantum IoT remains in its early growth phase. In addition, the study identifies significant sustainability challenges, such as energy consumption and electronic waste, that manifest differently across development stages. By combining technical, collaborative, and environmental perspectives, this research provides a unified framework for understanding IoT’s evolution. It contributes valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders seeking to guide future innovation, strengthen strategic alliances, and design more sustainable IoT technologies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Austria, part of Springer Nature 2025.
