Abstract Last decade witnessed a significant growth for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) development, marked by advancements in innovation, production, and diverse applications across various fields. UAVs are nowadays contributing significantly in various fields like in military for surveillance, reconnaissance, planning and executing attacks, in civil applications for remote sensing, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring and conservation, infrastructure inspection and maintenance, urban planning and smart cities, scientific research and meteorology and many more. The use of UAVs has also been rapidly growing in health care and emergency medical response services. Despite this huge growth very little information is available in terms of various design and development strategies available. There is even more inadequacy of available literature sources when it comes to design and implementation of UAVs in practical world. In this paper, we tried to focus on various parameters related to UAV i.e. types, various control strategies available, onboard sensors, and potential applications in different areas. Moreover, efforts have been made to significantly address the challenges and security concerns for their better and interruption free operations. © 2025 IEEE.
