Abstract Due to the ever-increasing scale and complexity of cyber-physical networks for smart cities, efficient network analytics and trust maintenance are indispensable for the Internet of Things (IoT). Complex networks have led to dramatic advances in analyzing the structure of technological and social networks. Inspired by the properties in complex networks, in this paper, a cloud-fog-edge computing paradigm is proposed for smart cities by mapping into a hierarchical network structure. To evaluate the trustworthiness and attack tolerance in the IoT framework for smart cities, we propose a Network Trust Maintenance Metric (NTMM) from the concept of centrality in a complex network domain. The proposed theoretical and computational tools pave the way for the efficient measurement of the cloud-fog-edge computing paradigm. Each level of IoT topological structure will be mapped to the corresponding complex network models. The synthetic experimental results, together with the real-world datasets, provide the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of trust maintenance in IoT. This proves the feasibility and robustness of proposed the centrality metrics in complex networks. © 2023 IEEE.
