Abstract Smart cities can potentially improve urban life quality by using sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for electricity and water metering, patient health monitoring, traffic congestion monitoring, etc. Effective traffic management mechanisms are critical for ensuring smooth traffic flow, reducing congestion, and improving urban traffic. The existing mechanisms for traffic management are based on mathematical and statistical models. However, these mechanisms may not perform well when the behaviour of traffic patterns is complex. In this chapter, we thoroughly discuss the traffic management challenges, the adoption of IoT technologies in smart-city applications, and the benefits of LoRa wide area network (LoRaWAN). We propose a mechanism for dynamically modifying the values of many configurable transmission parameters provided by the LoRa/LoRaWAN protocol, such as spreading factor, transmission power, coding rate, and bandwidth, to reduce traffic congestion. To do this, we considered a case study on a dense LoRa/LoRaWAN-based smart parking system that incorporates intelligent gateways, transmission parameter optimisation, and real-time traffic analysis. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Om Prakash Mahela, Baseem Khan and Puneet Kumar Jain. individual chapters, the contributors.
