Abstract Recent research illustrates that surveillance is in a development phase, massively increasing overall security solutions with the usage of advanced computer vision and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Automation technologies are making significant progress upon its global Smart City Surveillance sector, coupled with high-growth sub-segments such as Video Surveillance, Robotic Aerial security, Drones surveillance systems, etc. Drone fleets augment traditional security technology solutions for human security guards or fixed cameras by powerful legitimate approaches to fully autonomous action strategies. Obtaining an electronic eye-in-the-sky is as similar as it appears at quite a magic solution for security detection, recognition, and monitoring. Drone surveillance systems have made significant strides in recent years, such as leveraging advanced computer vision and cameras to provide 24/7 operational monitoring capabilities and autonomous deployment. However, there are still many challenges to the drone to include data obtained during surveillance activities with cognitive capacity and machine learning computing power, drone recharging under adverse weather conditions, and data security and safety. Another research area identified is to improve the energy conservation in UAVs to enhance the flight time and save its power during flying or hovering. This chapter proposes an energy-efficient framework for autonomous intelligent drones for Smart City surveillance. The underlying motivation for this chapter is to identify methods that allow the development of new strategies to the Internet of Drones frameworks and the effective utilization of drones in surveillance for smart cities highlighting the different areas of research. Furthermore, this chapter concludes with the recommendations and suggestions for future research in Smart City Surveillance. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
