Abstract Water management plays an essential role in creating intelligent and sustainable cities. Low flow in the pipeline due to pipe leakage lets germs and viruses from the environment into the drinking water system. The major cause of avoidable diseases is water contamination in pipes. The pipeline needs a better web-based water monitoring system to keep drinking water from getting contaminated. Hence, this paper proposed a webserver-based pipeline water monitoring system. The IoT platform uses a webserver to monitor water quality in real-time. IoT collects and tracks data wirelessly. It improved lifestyle control, especially smart-device communication. This paper aims to develop a system to alert authorities, enhance web-based water monitoring systems, and detect water quality and pipe flow using sensors. Flow, pH, temperature, and turbidity sensors are used in this project. pH, temperature, and turbidity sensor ranges meet WHO guidelines. Data prints on LCD and webserver. The parameters will be graphs, and it will continuously output ten pieces of data. Arduino to NodeMCU data transmission takes about seven milliseconds. If water quality is low, the buzzer and red LED will activate. Green LED lights up if the water is good. This proposed project may be employed in a variety of industries. Explored are the larger implications of Smart Water Quality Monitoring Systems on urban sustainability, noting their potential to enhance public health, ensure equitable water distribution and conserve scarce water resources. Furthermore, IoT-based solutions hold great promise in revolutionising water management practices as part of sustainable smart cities development strategies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG. 2024.
