Abstract This chapter explores the integration of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) in the context of smart cities, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize urban mobility. CAVs promise enhanced safety, reduced congestion, lower emissions, and a higher quality of life for city residents, but their integration poses challenges, including infrastructure development and regulatory considerations. Cross-disciplinary collaboration among experts in transportation, urban planning, computer science, ethics, psychology, and sociology is essential for successful CAV integration, ensuring a holistic approach that addresses technical, ethical, and user-centric aspects. CAVs rely on advanced sensor systems and machine learning algorithms to optimize traffic flow and safety through real-time decision-making. User experience studies inform user-centric Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) design, fostering trust and acceptance. CAVs have the potential to improve energy efficiency, but environmental challenges must be addressed with sustainable practices and digital twin technology. Digital twins enable real-time monitoring, simulation, and predictive modeling for optimized CAV performance. As smart cities evolve, digital twins will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to create efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly urban mobility systems, ensuring a brighter and more connected future. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
