Abstract Smart Cities concept does appear more often not only on the European but also on the national level. The Czech Republic is no exception. The concept was few years ago promoted mainly by international companies that provided technical solutions for the management of the cities' infrastructure, The tried to use advantages of the marketing, Smart" wave that came to the society. Smart solutions started to be offered not only to households but also to city authorities. The aim of this paper is to present concept of the Smart Cities in methodological way and to present world and Czech examples of cities being involved into the concept. Therefore the research of the specialized and popular science literature had been done and were chosen and presented examples of cities implementing principles of the concept. The output of the research is the theoretical anchoring of the Smart City concept in the environment of the Czech Republic where the definition of the Smart City concept is not completely settled yet.
