Abstract Rapid urbanization is leading to an imbalance in the environment owing to improper resource usage and increased pollution. One of the latest trends includes awareness of greener and more equitable cities. Sustainable trends are expected to offer various benefits that contribute significantly to the economy and society with minimized environmental health risks related to urban living. These offer improvements in water and air quality, mitigation of impacts from extreme events, and reduction of noise pollution. With the recent advancements in the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and IoT hardware, the applicability of AI in the environmental sector, those within the energy (for instance, smart grids), monitoring, and agricultural domains are expected to witness an increase. The study emphasizes different strategies, opportunities, and risks for developing smart cities. It contemplates the role of AI as a data-driven approach to maximizing energy efficiency at an unprecedented level. © 2024 by IGI Global.
