Abstract The Indian government has started Smart Cities Mission project, which aims to modernize and improve cities throughout the nation to make them more livable for locals. The Smart Cities Mission is a forward-thinking initiative. To encourage the growth of Smart Cities throughout the country, it is meant to serve as an example for other municipalities to emulate. There is no one, all-encompassing definition of Smart City that is available on the internet. A "Smart City" is a term which is interchangeably, with no one meaning accepted by everybody. Depending on circumstances, it varies from place to place. The phrase smart city has a different meaning in India than it does in the European Union. No one definition of a Smart City has emerged, not even in India. This research will focus on a qualitative analysis of the Indian Smart Cities Mission as well as various articles, papers, and conference proceedings talking about smart cities, constantly changing dimensions and their implementation progress. Limited this research to the foremost relevant articles, papers, and books; it will also cover the theoretical concept of Smart Cities, “Indian smart cities mission,” and its conceptual framework. Finally, the study's findings will shed light on the mission statement, the implementation steps, and the opportunities and problems facing India's smart city efforts. The paper will also highlight the current status of the program and the key challenges in having smart solutions. © 2023 IEEE.
