| Abstract | Rapid urbanization without corresponding infrastructure and public policy development has harmful environmental impacts. Advanced countries experience a high urbanization rate and suffer from densely populated areas, poor infrastructure, pollution, and congestion. The vision of a modern smart city is necessary to improve efficiency and resource utilization. The study aims to examine the interaction roles of information and communication technology (ICT) in shaping smart urbanization to influence environmental impact in 34 advanced countries. This study explores the various impact of ICT namely telephone, internet and mobile usage with the dataset spanning from the year 2000 to 2019 by using panel regression model. The results show that telephone and mobile usage can harmonize the detrimental impact of urbanization on the environment. However, internet usage comes with pitfalls. The outcomes of this study imply that these different technological elements are combined in modern cities to provide their inhabitants with a greater standard of living. It is also crucial to understand that these cutting-edge technologies might cause issues. The uniqueness of this study is in the manner its key technology elements are coordinated and integrated given their obvious synergies to support urban intelligence and planning tasks. This study contributes to underlining the importance of phone, internet, and mobile usage in relation to the planning and creation of future sustainable cities. © 2022 IEEE. |
