Abstract The advancement of digital inclusive finance is crucial for modernizing and enhancing China's agricultural sector while encouraging environmentally friendly, low-carbon growth. This study investigates the influence of digital inclusive finance on agricultural carbon emission intensity, based on data from 284 cities in China spanning 2014 to 2021. The main conclusions are: (1) Over the period from 2014 to 2021, digital inclusive finance in various Chinese urban centers increased steadily, while agricultural carbon emissions saw a general decline in intensity; (2) A series of robustness tests validate that digital inclusive finance notably decrease the agricultural carbon emission intensity; (3) The impact of digital inclusive finance is more evident in cities with stronger smart city policy support and larger populations; (4) The mechanism analysis reveals that digital inclusive finance facilitates agricultural carbon emission reduction through promoting rural entrepreneurship, green agricultural entrepreneurship, and agricultural innovation. Furthermore, it demonstrates a more pronounced carbon reduction effect in regions with underdeveloped traditional investment and financing systems. These results shed light on the role of digital inclusive finance in supporting environmentally friendly and high-quality agricultural development, offering policy recommendations for leveraging digital technology and finance to achieve carbon reduction in agriculture. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
