Abstract While cities occupy only 3% of the total land on Earth, they are the primary source of global greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to about 80% of the global GDP. Cities are consistently facing challenges like a growing population and old infrastructure. The Smart City dares to confront these critical challenges with smart and intelligent approaches to achieve optimized solutions for citizens. As a growing field of research, smart city assessment has already shown commendable success in many parts of the world and created a reasonable ground for further development. This chapter chronologically discusses the emergence of the smart city assessment concept and its evolution. It also examines various approaches that have been undertaken around the world, explains the basic principles followed by smart city assessment processes and, finally, looks at the connections between smart city assessment and climate resilience planning. This chapter reveals the salient features of smart city assessment processes to inform interest groups such as planners, architects, policy makers, investors, and the general public. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
