Abstract As cities continue to grapple with challenges including pollution, resource scarcity, urban sprawl, and population pressure, urban stakeholders are turning to the adoption of sustainable solutions coupled with the implementation of innovative technologies to transition to smart and sustainable cities in order to provide its inhabitants with an improved quality of life associated with reduced emissions, safer environment, optimized services, and cleaner cities, that greatly increases the standard of living. While the concept of smart and sustainable cities can be embraced within the existing urban systems to curb the growing challenges, the transformation to smart and sustainable cities should not just be focused on technology adoption and deployment, but should also focus on the implementation of adequate governance frameworks and standards that are derived from experiences and knowledge from urban stakeholders and other cities on a similar trajectory. This chapter will explore the concept of smart and sustainable cities as a long-term journey along with the role that international standards can play in supporting self-evaluations and sustainability assessments of smart city approaches oriented toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving digital transformation. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
