Abstract We are in the early stages of smart cities, and in this chapterthe authors look at what they are and how security cameras are at the heart of the development and a strong CCTV security system for smart city surveillance. The ultimate proof of humanity’s progress is its collective evolution. We have progressed so far in our evolutionary history because of our collective endurance, adaptation to newer environments, and adoption of survival strategies. We are currently in one of the most fascinating periods of human evolution because we are entering a new era known as the information age. Most of our tasks are now automated. What began with the Industrial Revolution has taken many forms and shapes, contributing to our more affluent lifestyles and experiences. We are developing advanced environments and living spaces with machines and computer intelligence at the fulcrum of what we call regular cities or towns. Smart cities are anything but ordinary. They are both ambitious and forward-thinking. Smart cities are more immersive and lively versions of their predecessors. They are powered by the Internet of Things, cellular, Wi-Fi, and edge computing devices and peripherals that work together to foster an environment with automation, sophisticated lifestyles, advanced analytics and computing, and other features. Almost every single point of contact, such as equipment, devices, networks, andoperational systems, is fitted out with sensors and embedded systems, allowing the devices to process data and share visualized information with users in the form of possibilities for optimization. Every aspect of a smart city is tech-driven for sophisticated operations, from complex infrastructures such as power grids and water utility systems to those as simple as home automation systems and traffic management modules. Globally, smart cities are developing, and numerous governments have made significant financial investments towards them.
