Abstract The smart city is the central object of this research, with an emphasis on the use of games and gamification applicable in the context of Brazilian slums. Thus, the objective includes the study of the contribution of games and gamification in the design of smart cities, with a focus on urban improvements and socio-spatial inclusion of favelas. Thus, the methodology presents descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative research, starting with a bibliometric analysis on the terms favela, smart city, and gamification/gamification in the scientific productions of the Scopus database, identifying specificities, and thematic convergences. Establishing intersections and tangencies with the thematic tripod, we develop a survey of games (games, Serious Games and Games for Change) and applications that have the city and city management as the background. Through pre-established criteria, 11 games and applications are analyzed, culminating in the systematization of information such as the area, the objective, the level of interaction with the dimensions of smart cities, the existence of urban application, emergency, if it was applied or if it has potential for application in slums. The results illustrate that the theme has been little studied and has a lot of potential for its development; indicates that the approach to the dimensions of smart cities is still timid, but existing; those few games more than half of the games studied have already been applied in cities, however, only one in the context of slums, with the requalification of urban space; and that despite the previous finding, half of the games have the potential for application in Brazilian slums. A global perspective of the scientific literature can be provided by analyzing original primary information in the area, as well as existing publications, works, programs, and games. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Krishna Kumar, Gaurav Saini, Duc Manh Nguyen, Narendra Kumar and Rachna Shah; individual chapters, the contributors.
