Abstract Previous studies on the influencing factors of enterprise's efficiency seldom focus on the construction of smart cities. Different from them, this paper investigates the impact of smart city construction on the enterprise's performance in the theoretical framework of smart city evolution. Therefore, this paper matches the data of China's smart city construction with the micro-enterprise data, analyses the impact of smart city construction on the enterprise's productivity, and further explores its mechanisms. The main findings are as follows. Firstly, the construction of smart city is conducive to resource allocation efficiency and knowledge spillovers, which is propitious to enhancing enterprise's productivity, especially for the Internet of Things listed enterprises which are highly dependent on the intelligence inputs. Secondly, the effect of smart city construction on enterprise's efficiency is subject to heterogeneity of enterprises and cities. Especially, the smart cities of medium-sized are the most capable of promoting efficiency of enterprises, which shows an inverted "U"shape and an optimal threshold effect. Thirdly, this paper further finds that smart cities construction promotes the total factor productivity of enterprises mainly through the mechanisms of cost saving and innovation incentive. This study throws light upon how smart cities affect enterprise's efficiency, and provide policy implications for the integration of smart cities and Internet of Things' enterprise. © 2021 ACM.
