This case study examines the Sidewalk Toronto-Quayside project in Toronto, Canada, approximately 16 months after it was first announced. This case study is important for two reasons. First, as a joint venture with Sidewalk Labs, sister company to Google-of the most ubiquitous and valuable companies in the world-reception of this project is bound to be precedent-setting. Second, this case likely differs from others presented in this volume in that this project has not yet been built and it is still in the planning and visioning stage. Overall, this project demonstrates the complexity of moving beyond smart city imaginaries toward implementing a plan for a 12-acre “smart city” precinct on the waterfront of Canada’s largest city. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
