Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) offers a valuable proposition for various sectors of society, ranging from light bulbs to healthcare resources and even smart city infrastructures. This technology interacts with a considerable volume of data, which is susceptible to potential alterations or thefts. Consequently, one of the main challenges in cybersecurity involves preventing, detecting, and managing these incidents. The aim of this study is to establish the current state of knowledge regarding cybersecurity and its influence on cyberattacks directed at IoT devices. In this context, a systematic review of empirical studies up to the year 2022 was conducted. The search strategy resulted in the identification of 70 studies, which were subjected to exclusion criteria and evaluated in terms of quality to form the definitive list. The selected studies were organized into a PRISMA diagram and categorized according to sources of information such as Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, EBSCOhost, ARDI, and ProQuest. The results of the systematic review revealed four criteria for measuring the effectiveness of cybersecurity and highlighted China, the United Kingdom, and the United States as the most productive countries in terms of the number of published papers and collaborations. This study provides valuable information for future research and establishes a point of comparison across different situational environments. © 2024 Instituto Politecnico Nacional.
