Abstract Quantum cryptography has been fascinating the computing world since its inception. Being governed by the principles of Quantum Mechanics, it helps us encrypt messages to prevent fraudulent trespassing as well as hacking. It also ensures fast delivery of messages to solely recipient to which it is intended. Likewise, smart cities can bank upon cryptocurrency which is direct manifest of quantum cryptography. Smart cities can effectively adopt the tokenization resulting from cryptocurrency. Although, it registers an escalated growth, there are certain areas where there is scope of improvements before being truly a functional entity. In this chapter, we intend to give a brief overview of quantum cryptography within the purview of Smart City. Apart from this, we will present the state-of-the art quantum cryptography technologies along with security concerns. Further, the possibilities for synergistic amalgamation with development of Smart City will also be dwelt upon. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
