Abstract The study is devoted to the issues of energy efficiency in the implementation of smart city strategies. As an integral part of sustainable urban development, measures to increase the energy efficiency of all spheres of life in a smart city solve a set of problematic issues aimed at achieving the main goal of improving the quality of life in cities. The object of research is the processes of sustainable development of smart cities. The subject of the study is applied aspects of energy efficiency programmes. The research methods were the main provisions of the concept of sustainable urban development, which involves ensuring the balance, environmental friendliness and inclusiveness of development, a systemic approach, which involves an interdisciplinary approach based on the interconnection and mutual influence of all components of the system of sustainable development of smart cities. The author considers the world experience of implementing energy efficiency programmes in smart cities, including initiatives related to the creation of energy city atlases and digital interactive reference systems, modernization of energy systems, measures to improve the energy efficiency of buildings through the creation of self-sufficient energy buildings and the development of district heating systems, introduction of smart lighting systems for buildings and smart outdoor lighting systems, development of electric vehicles and active re Taken together, the implementation of energy efficiency programmes in smart city strategies helps to reduce energy costs, including household payments, develop green technologies, and promote decarbonisation of urban development. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
