Abstract An intelligent transportation system is a crucial part of the infrastructure needed to transform an urban city into a smart city. As the technology has advanced in recent years, including the emergence of technologies like machine learning (ML) and the Internet of Things (IoT)-based data acquisition and processing systems, building and implementing a smart transportation system has now become easier and more sustainable. The potential for these technologies to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, while also relieving traffic congestion, is encouraging. In this section, we will discuss how to plan and build a smart transportation system that leverages IoT to improve urban mobility without compromising sustainability. The proposed system utilizes existing IoT technologies in order to deliver on-road information on traffic, parking, and public transportation using integrated sensors, wireless networks, and cloud storage and processing. To further improve the smart transportation’s efficiency, the system incorporates hybrid ML algorithms to analyze and process data collected by IoT sensors. This system can achieve higher accuracy and better sustainability than the real-world (non-smart) system. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Shalli Rani and Ashu Taneja; individual chapters, the contributors.
